How Dr. Bridwell Treats Congenital Scoliosis
Depending on the specific case, Dr. Bridwell uses one of two surgical options to treat congenital scoliosis. After thoroughly studying the case, Dr. Bridwell will make his best recommendation, and he will completely explain the surgical procedure.
For congenital scoliosis, Dr. Bridwell may:
- Resect a portion of the spine: In a resection, Dr. Bridwell removes part of the spine to help fix the patient’s curve. He may resect the hemivertebra.
- Equalize the growth potential: One problem associated with congenital scoliosis is that the spine can grow crooked because one side grows faster than the other. To equalize the growth potential and prevent the spine from growing crooked, Dr. Bridwell will fuse one or both side of the spine.
